Surfshark VPN is relatively a new service but it definitely bags some great features which make it comparable to the top dogs of the industry.
Comparing with the best an over-exaggeration?
To be honest I used the service for a week and it didn’t disappoint me in some major areas like speed, streaming and torrenting.
Although it doesn’t have too many servers (1,000+ as per official site) and that may be an issue for some (read professionals) who would like to test a VPN to its limits but an everyday user should be just fine and will find the service more than satisfactory.
Now, let’s analyze how good this service actually is and how it stands out against its rivals in my Surfshark Review of 2020.
The Basics and Ease of Use
I am a big fan of simplicity and Surfshark provides me just that with its minimal and clean interface. An intuitive design and easy to use application get my praise.
So with all the right ingredients a VPN needs, Surfshark covers all that with apps available for Windows, Android, iOS and Mac which are discussed in detailed in this Surfshark VPN Review. For those who want to configure and manually set up their service on Linux or home-based router can be done with no problems.
Surfshark does provide browser extensions for both chrome and firefox but be cautious as they do not protect the device but only the flow of internet traffic on your browser.
With the industry standard of allowing 5 simultaneous connections on any device, Surfshark has set a new benchmark by allowing to connect an unlimited number of devices at one time.
How long will this USP be in effect remains to be seen!
IP Leak Test
The most important test before reviewing any VPN provider is the IP Leak Test because once the service leaks an IP, its game over! The very concept of a VPN is to secure you from the prying eyes of the government, ISPs, and cyber goons.
Let’s find out if Surfshark is tightly screwed or if there are holes in this service. The tests which I ran for this Surfshark review testing are:
Team Surfshark, you have done excellently as there were zero leaks and I am in a very strong position now to recommend this service to my readers.

5,9,14 eyes Countries
These countries collect data that fall under their jurisdiction meaning any VPN provider that comes under their geographical locations has the authority to ask for users activities on the internet without their consent thus you may fall victim and land in serious trouble.
Alarming? Indeed it is!
Thankfully, Surfshark doesn’t fall in this area because its headquarters are located in the British Virgin Islands who do not have data retention laws in place.
However in the near future if laws are changed then what will be the backup of this provider remains to be seen.
No Log Policy of Surfshark
This area means trust of its users where I and many like me do not want our activities to be stored in the database. There are many cases on the internet where a VPN service has failed to keep that trust which it promised in its stated policy.
But, they do collect data which is necessary and shouldn’t cause any alarm:
- Your personal information (email and encrypted password)
- Billing Information and Order history
- Diagnostic Reports
Does Surfshark have Warrant Canary?
Yes, it does! But what is warrant Canary?
To put it in lay terms a VPN provider informs its user that government has issued a subpoena against them.
But, with clear transparency and Surfsharks current warrant canary, you are in safe hands as they haven’t received any orders from the government.
Encryption and Protocols
The service uses the best encryption tool such as 256-bit AES and is in perfect alliance with SHA512 authentication hash and 2048-bit DHE-RSA key exchange.
Talking about VPN protocols, Surfshark only comes with two in comparison to others who have more protocols:
It should not be a sign of worry since these protocols are very important and have got you covered.
Since OpenVPN is the standard, on the other hand, IKEv2 has the advantage of flexible connections for network switching providing a wide range of encryption protocols.
In the case of OpenVPN, it can switch between UDP and TCP providing faster download speeds but with IKEv2, you are more protected but speeds will be sacrificed.
My recommendation would be to leave them on a recommended setting as the protocols will switch automatically depending upon the use.
Torrenting and Netflix
So does Surfshark allow torrenting and unblock Netflix?
It certainly does.
Surfshark claims that all their servers are P2P optimized in their torrent policy which means you have unlimited access to geo-restricted sites.
For me, it’s very good news altogether since I am a strong advocate of freedom which should not be the case for a select few as access to information is everyone’s right.
In my testing, I was able to access US Netflix libraries with ease when connecting to different US servers where even big guns sometimes fail to deliver.
This is where Surfshark outshines its competitors because not only it delivers but it delivers cheaply.
Surfshark and China
It’s not easy for many VPNs to work out there and Surfshark is no exception either. Yes, Surfshark team is always active on Reddit threads to solve issues but evading the Great Firewall of China is a very difficult task.
Note: For people who are planning to travel to China should install a VPN beforehand and you might be in some luck, else their servers will block you if you try installing a VPN inside China.
Speeds on Surfshark
My biggest concern was the Surfshark speed test because no matter how much you provide security and reliability, it all boils down to one aspect only i.e., Surfshark Speed.
I am using a 10mbps connection:
I tested mainly three regions only:
- US Server
- EU Server
- Asia Server
I was certainly impressed by the download speed of Surfshark but not by the upload speed as it was almost 63% slower. For those who upload and share their files heavily on the internet, it can be a bit of concern for them but all in all its still very good.
There’s nothing I need to say here as the result speaks for itself in this Surfshark VPN review. Again this is a very impressive job done by Surfshark.
Still pretty much the same with download speed but we can see a lot of variation with the upload speed.
Although Surfshark has done pretty well they need to work upon the inconsistency of their upload speeds.
With any service, you need to have the best support going and Surfshark has ticked all the boxes right but let’s find out if it does with customer support too?
My experience was a pleasant one indeed with their 24/7 chat support. The solution was provided instantly and the problem was solved quickly.
Interestingly the people at live chat were well informed about their product and knew exactly what kind of an answer a user is looking for.
I asked them a very basic question on torrenting and because of their support I got to know of a little hack which is when you are torrenting, use US and UK servers for best results.
To put things into perspective, I am really impressed by the support as they have definitely put in a lot of effort in this domain.
Pricing and Refund Policy
The real deal has always been pricing because a user perceives a product by its price. Its human psychology that when a product is expensive, it should be good too!
But that’s not the case with Surfshark here as the service is cheap when compared to some of the best providers out there and in the same breath performs or outperforms its rivals with ease. I did a Surfshark vs NordVPN comparison and they were very close in terms of performance.
Let’s have a look at their different plans:
So, there you have it, not only the service is cheap with its go-to plan of 24-months especially, but also performs exceedingly well.
You can also go through Surfshark Reddit review before buying this amazing service.
Now let’s see what kind of payment options are available:
- Credit Card
The above options should be more than enough for anyone who would like to buy this service as they are plenty.
Talking about the refund policy, like most they do have a 30-day money-back guarantee which gives more than enough time to test the service to its limits and then simply ask for a refund if it was not up to your expectation.
Lastly, there is no Surfshark free trial available and to be honest that should not concern anyone because they have a refund policy for that.
I did not find any information regarding whose behind Surfhsark on their website. I asked it on chat support and even they did not have a satisfactory answer.
The background is important as it creates trust and maybe in the future, they do tell us about themselves otherwise they will lose trust which they have created in such a short span of time.
Is Surfshark Recommended?
Yes, I highly recommend it because everything was on point, be it security, privacy, speeds, torrenting and streaming.
Secondly, its the pricing factor because the dollar to performance ratio compared to others is excellent. 2-Year is the best plan they have.
Lastly, I would like to say that with its 1-week testing, I am looking forward to testing this service even more and will definitely add more in my Surfshark Review.
